Certifications & Skills Training

Before employment, or in your first few weeks on the job, you must obtain certain certifications and demonstrate that you have the skills needed for your positions.

Adventure Guides

The certifications required include:

  • Class 4 Driver License is preferred but a valid class 5 may be considered for some positions.
  • Standard First Aid – A Wilderness First Aid certification that includes Alberta OH&S approved Standard First Aid, like this, is preferred.
  • Swiftwater Rescue is required for some positions.
  • OCC Field Leader Hiking, Winter and/or Paddling or the Interpretive Guides Association Group Management Course.

You are responsible for the costs and time associated with obtaining and maintaining these certifications. Some of these courses may be offered in-house or as a group at a discounted rate.

We require all of our guides to have a minimum of intermediate skills at the recreational level in all the activities they guide. This includes being comfortable hiking the Coral Creek Canyon, walking on ice or rowing a raft down the North Saskatchewan River (class 1-2) while maintaining a conversation with the guests. These skills can be developed as you work for us, both as paid training sessions and as unpaid opportunities.

Paid training includes all mandatory training, outside of the required certifications listed above or in your job description. This includes reviewing our itineraries, shadowing a tour, leading a practice tour and several professional development training sessions each year.

Unpaid training opportunities are designed to give you more time to become comfortable leading our tours, to learn new skills not directly required to lead our tours or to spend additional time refining your skills. This includes borrowing rental equipment to head out on your own time, tagging along on a scenic float tour to gain more river time or attending workshops organized by groups like the Interpretive Guides Association.
